In this video, learn how to fix “We couldn’t create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files” error when doing a clean install of Windows 10/8/7.

1. When the error occurs, press Shift+F10 to open CMD.
2. When the Command Prompt window opens, run these commands one by one:

diskpart

list disk

select disk X (X: Select the system disk you use)

clean

create partition primary size=5000

format fs=ntfs

assign

active

list volume

exit

cd d: (change directory to the USB flash drive)

xcopy d: c:/d /h /k (Copy all the Windows installation files from USB drive to C: drive)
3. You can now close Command Prompt and unplug the installation USB drive from computer and restart. After that, start the installation process again. This time error “We couldn’t create a new partition” will not happen.

That’s about it.

  • DO NOT do this. It will erase all of your things. All of your partitions. It only solves the problem by creating an even worse one.

  • I am trying to install windows but keep getting errors. I "think" I need to re-format the HD and start with a newly created partition with the correct settings. Setting were changed by a previous user and wont start windows at all? How would I run these tasks/commands from a floppy/CD/USB?

  • I think you forgot to mention that you need to start the next boot from the ssd

John Dope July 27, 2020 10:07 pm Reply
  • This works like a charm but quite out date. For more details, I created bootable SSD (not USB as usual) via MACOS. And my setup is TUF x570 + 3600X + NVMe. I can manage to boot to setup page (disable secure boot, fastboot, wifi, enable CSM), but always has a lot of errors. After some search, I known the reason is windows can not install when you have multiples storage devices (I have 2, once is SSD for install windows, and one is NVMe). So what I need to do is copy all file from SSD to NVMe following this videos, and remember to `convert GPT` after the first `clean` command, and `create partition primary size=9000` because 5000MB is not enough for today windows installation. After copying, IMPORTANT thing to do is unplug the SSD. Only keep 1 storage device on mainboard. If anyone has same problem, just leave reply here.

  • Thanks a million man, you saved my day. I spent 6 hours to find a solution. I just needed to add convert GPT step after the clean part.

  • Know what's an easier fix? Disconnect all hard drives that you are not installing on… It's a drive priority error, it's like windows wants to be installed on disk one as the main drive not disk 3 I disconnected all data cable and left my m.2 plugged in a it loaded

  • Thank you so much for this video. I just built a new PC and scavenged my SSD from my old build to cut costs for now. All I wanted was to wipe the damned disk and start over from scratch, but Win10 wouldn't let me. It insisted on keeping old files and misnaming my user folder, then refusing to let me fix it.

I tried using a Ubuntu disk to format, but then I got this error and the methods in this video are the ONLY fixes I've seen that actually worked.
